Travel Kettles and Voltage — What Actually Matters
A plug adapter changes the shape of the pins and nothing else. Here is what that means for the kettle in your bag.

This is the one piece of travel-coffee advice where getting it wrong is a safety problem rather than a disappointment. It is also genuinely simple once you have read it once.
The distinction that matters
A plug adapter changes the shape of the pins. It lets a plug physically fit a foreign socket. It does not change the electricity coming out of the wall.
A voltage converter changes the voltage. It is a different, heavier, more expensive device.
Most people own adapters and assume they do something they do not.
Why it matters for kettles specifically
Phone chargers and laptop bricks are almost all dual-voltage — the label says something like 100–240V, 50/60Hz — so they work anywhere with a simple adapter. This is why most travellers never think about voltage.
Heating appliances are different. A kettle's whole job is to convert electricity into heat, and the element is built for one voltage. Plug a 120V kettle into a 230V supply and it draws roughly four times the intended power. It will not simply run hot; the element can fail, and it is a plausible fire.
The reverse is safe but useless: a 230V kettle on a 120V supply gets about a quarter of the power and will take a very long time to do very little.
What to check before you pack
Read the label on the base of the appliance.
100–240V— dual-voltage. An adapter is all you need.120Vonly, or230Vonly — single-voltage. It works only in countries on that supply, adapter or not.
Then check what your destination uses. Each country page on RoomBrew lists mains voltage, frequency and plug types.
The rough division:
- ~100–127V: United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan (100V), Taiwan, Colombia, and much of Central America.
- ~220–240V: the UK and Ireland, all of continental Europe, Australia and New Zealand, most of Asia, Africa and South America.
Japan is worth flagging: at 100V it is the lowest mains supply in common use, and appliances from elsewhere often underperform there even when nominally compatible.
Frequency — 50Hz versus 60Hz — does not matter for a kettle. It matters for things with motors and clocks. A kettle is a resistive heater and does not care.
Do you even need one?
Often not, and a kettle is one of the heaviest things you can put in a bag.
Electric kettles are already standard in guest rooms across the UK, Ireland, most of Europe, Japan and much of Asia and Australasia. If you are travelling in those regions, check whether your hotel has one before packing your own.
Where they are genuinely scarce — most of the United States outside extended-stay properties — a travel kettle earns its space if you travel often. Otherwise, asking reception for hot water costs nothing and weighs nothing.
If you do buy one
- Buy dual-voltage. It is the entire point of a travel kettle, and plenty of cheap ones are not.
- Check the wattage against the room. Some older hotels and many cruise cabins have low-current sockets that will trip a breaker under a 1500W load. A lower-wattage kettle is slower but more likely to work.
- Expect it to be slow. Travel kettles are typically 600–1000W against 2000–3000W at home.
- Never run it dry, and never plug a heating appliance into a bathroom shaver socket — those are current-limited and not intended for it.
The honest recommendation
Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the appliance itself over anything you read online, including this page. If a label is missing or unreadable, do not guess — buy a cheap kettle at your destination, or use one of the no-equipment options instead.
